Contaminated turtle meat linked to FSM deaths
Investigators believe contaminated turtle meat has caused a number of deaths on Murilo Island near Chuuk State in the Federated States of Micronesia.
Six people have died and a hundred more are ill after eating contaminated Hawksbill turtle meat.
The World Health Organisation is warning communities that any turtle anywhere may also be contaminated and the cultural practice of eating turtle needs to be re-examined.
Two teams were dispatched to the remote island of Murilo, the first one deployed a field hospital and the other conducted the epidemological investigation.
The investigation was led by Dr Boris Pavlin country liason officer for Northern Micronesia at the World Health Organisation.
